The PRIMA Bionic Vision Chip

A Ray of Light for Dry AMD: The PRIMA Bionic Vision Chip

For millions living with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), losing central vision feels like losing part of life. Reading, recognizing faces, or simply enjoying a sunset becomes difficult- or impossible. But an exciting new technology called the PRIMA system is bringing hope, offering a glimpse of vision restoration in ways that were once only science fiction.

 What Is the PRIMA System?

PRIMA is a tiny chip, thinner than a human hair, that’s implanted beneath the retina. It acts as a kind of digital retina, designed to bring back some central vision in those with advanced dry AMD, especially those affected by geographic atrophy- the most severe form of the condition.

Instead of relying on damaged photoreceptors, PRIMA uses light-activated pixels to stimulate the remaining healthy cells in the eye. It works together with special smart glasses that project images onto the chip using near-infrared light. The result? Some patients are now able to see letters, numbers, and even words again after training and rehabilitation.

 What Does It Feel Like?

While the vision isn’t “natural” or in full color, it gives many patients the gift of functionality- restoring independence in reading, identifying shapes, and navigating daily life. Even better, this new vision doesn't interfere with your existing peripheral vision, making it a powerful tool for those whose central vision has faded but who still see out of the corners of their eyes.

 Why This Matters

Dry AMD has long lacked effective options for restoring vision. While recent drugs may slow the disease, PRIMA is the first technology aimed at bringing back lost vision. It's still in clinical trials, but early results are extremely promising- with some patients gaining the ability to read again for the first time in years.

If you or someone you love has been impacted by dry AMD, this breakthrough is a reason to stay hopeful. Retinal prosthesis technology is evolving quickly, and the future is looking brighter- literally.

Take Action for Your Eyes

Science like the PRIMA system is one piece of the puzzle. The other? Nutrition.

What you eat has a powerful effect on eye health. Foods rich in zinc, lutein, vitamin C, and plant-based proteins can help slow AMD’s progression.

One of our favorite recipes to support your eyes is this hearty, delicious, and nutrient-packed meal: Barley Lentil Chicken Soup
It’s warm, filling, and loaded with ingredients that support retinal health. Cook it, share it, and nourish your vision- one spoonful at a time.
